My secret: Sleep Deprivation.

People ask me "Where do you get all these weird ideas that you put in here?" They really want to know how I come up with the categories and my rules for living and the rest of what I write here.

I'll tell you my secret: I haven't had a good night's sleep in 630 days. That's how long it's been since the Babies!, who should be called "The Babies! Who Never Sleep And In Fact Rarely Slow Down" were born. Since they don't sleep, I don't sleep.

I am, therefore, well acquainted with the effects of sleep deprivation in human beings. But not every aspect of being exhausted is as entertaining and funny as this blog; there are downsides to being mentally drained and numb. Light sleepers can come in for trouble. I know; I'm a light sleeper and that's why the Babies! keep me up.

If you're a light sleeper, you can get woken up by anything. Your house settling, the kids sneaking out to go to a party, your husband waking up at midnight and deciding that it's a good time to watch a rerun of How I Met Your Mother (ask Sweetie about that)... anything. The result, then, is that you're tired, you're cranky, you're irritable, and worse, you can't focus properly, you lose creativity and the ability to think critically, your reflexes slow down.

There's all kinds of studies about what happens when people don't get enough sleep -- but not a lot of studies on how to help light sleepers get through the night in our noisy world. One option? One of the white noise machines available from Dreamessentials.com. These machines can create gentle white noise in the background, lulling you to sleep and serving as a buffer against the intrusions of other noise, helping you sleep more soundly; there's standalone machines and pillow-speakers.

If that's not your thing, how about ear plugs? They have soft foam and silicone ear plugs. Pop a couple of those into your ears and sleep blissfully.

I'm talking to you, Sweetie. Get a couple of those, and let me finish watching my TV show. The Babies! won't let me sleep, anyway, and I need to keep getting my ideas. Save yourself.
